Complete Longboard Setup Guide for Beginners
Share
Welcome to Longboarding!
This guide will walk you through assembling your first complete longboard setup. Whether you're cruising, carving, or just getting started, understanding your board's components is essential.
What You'll Need
- Longboard deck
- Two trucks (front and back)
- Four wheels
- Eight bearings (two per wheel)
- Hardware (mounting bolts and nuts)
- Grip tape (usually pre-applied)
- Skate tool or wrench set
Step 1: Attach the Trucks
Position your trucks on the deck, aligning the mounting holes. The kingpin (large center bolt) should face inward toward the center of the board. Insert the hardware bolts from the top of the deck through the mounting holes, then secure with nuts on the bottom. Tighten in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure.
Step 2: Install the Bearings
Each wheel needs two bearings. Press the first bearing into one side of the wheel until it's flush, then flip and repeat on the other side. You can use your truck axle to press them in by placing the bearing on the axle and pushing the wheel down firmly.
Step 3: Mount the Wheels
Slide a wheel onto each truck axle. Add a washer, then thread on the axle nut. Tighten until snug, but leave a tiny bit of play so the wheel spins freely. Test by spinning each wheel—it should rotate smoothly without wobbling.
Step 4: Adjust Your Trucks
Use your skate tool to adjust the kingpin nut. Tighter trucks offer more stability (great for beginners), while looser trucks allow sharper turns. Start tight and gradually loosen as you gain confidence.
Step 5: Safety Check
Before your first ride, check that all hardware is secure, wheels spin freely, and there's no excessive wobble. Wear a helmet and protective gear, especially while learning.
Ready to Ride!
Your longboard is now assembled and ready to roll. Start on flat, smooth surfaces and practice pushing, balancing, and stopping before tackling hills or busy areas.
